holding a fundraiser for victims good evening. people in san bruno are rallying around their neighbors, holding a fund raiser for victims of the explosion and fire. in san bruno where determination and high spirits were the order of the day. hi don. >> reporter: that's right. if you can hear me above the loud music in the background they are still partying on as they have done most of the day. we are in city park, a place we have come many times to deal with the complexities of the recovery. that has all been a downer today was an upper. this must be the most up beat i vent in san bruno in the past two weeks or so. since the devastating gas line explosion and fire. it is not only a benefit for community, it is a kind of, well, big hug therapy. >> after such a tragedy, and let everybody see each other's faces again is make it known we

are going to come back from this and be better and stronger than ever. >> holly's family home was destroyed so was the home of joe vazquez's parents. >> if you lookout this way, so many people, it is a beautiful thing. everybody got everybody back, got t-shirts, it is really warm, great, fantastic. >> friday, crews began cleaning up remains of the once neat neighbourhood, sorting out what was recyclable and what was not and trying to trade carefully on memories. >> this isn't just a demolition job this is removal of individuals homes, personal belongings, their material. they are respectful. they are in someone's home. >> people may be sad to see their homes gone but looking forward to a chance to begin anew. joe vazquez said san bruno needed a day like this. >> like a high school reunion,

elementary school reunion, neighbourhood reunion, yes, i think everybody needed one of these days. >> reporter: well, folks here say it has always been a tight community today it showed it. hey, done, how much money were they hoping to raise and how it will be distributed? >> reporter: i do know they sold hundreds of t-shirts for $20 a piece i don't have a total on that and i know the disk jockey here, born and bread in san bruno, donated $10,000. so money is coming in we don't have a tally but it is going strictly for victims families. >> thank you very much. a south bay family released video of what they say is a fake arrest by a san jose police officer. the cell phone video was secretly shot by a father of a 15-year-old boy it appears to show the officer pretending to arrest the boy for having sex with his step daughter boy was handcuffed the officer lectured the teenager about his behaviour. >> not a good thing for the

person you had sex with is a cops daughter. a cops daughter is not someone you mess around with. >> the handcuffs came off and the boy was never arrested the officers actions are now being crim fallly investigated, the officer's lawyer said he was just trying to scare the boy straight. >> california's first execution in nearly 5 years is going ahead as scheduled, at least for now. a federal judge has refused to reconsider his decision not to issue a stay of execution for brown. he is on death row at san quentin and set to be put to death by lethal injection wednesday. on monday brown's lawyers plan to ask marin county court to block the execution. another accident at a dangerous san francisco intersection. this is the scene at battery and broadway this afternoon. police say the driver of this

white suv was drivinger ratically and hit another suv and then ran away on foot. police suspect alcohol may have played a role. last month a tour bus was involved in an accident at the same intersection. a 3 alarm fire gutted a victorian home in san jose it broke out overnight at this home on new port avenue six people were inside at the time they were all okay. the fire started? a shed, it spread to a house no word on what caused it. and sports teams, at cal could be on the chopping block, the chancellor will announce tuesday changes the athletic department will make to stay within its budget. the department has spent as much as $13 million over budget in recent years. the athletic director says football, basketball and women's volleyball are safe. prescription drugs are the fastest growing drug problem in the united states especially among young people. one reason, they are easy to find. chances are there are some in your medicine cabinet now.

julie watts shows us today the dea took an unusual step to fight back. no questions asked. >> he went to sleep and just never woke up. >> reporter: april is just one of many who've lost a child to prescription drugs. >> they need to be treated as loaded weapons. they are. >> reporter: the dea agrees. much like the popular gun buy back program they are sponsoring this one day prescription drug take back program at police precincts across the country. a relief for many like candace in oakland who has been trying for some time to safely dispose of this bag full of drugs. >> how do you get rid of them? household hazardous waste told me to grind them up and mix them with kitty litter in the trash. it doesn't seem like a great option. >> reporter: grinding up those unused drugs is one of the best options for keeping them out of the hands of teens. complicated? yes and that is precisely the

with many locations is hiring and you can start almost immediately. >> looking for a job for the holidays, one company with many locations is hiring, macy's announced it will hire 65,000 associates for the holiday season. they are hiring for part-time position across the country. they will also need workers for call center, distribution center and online fulfillment centers, applications are being accepted online and hiring will start next month. thousands of volunteers went to work today sprucing up our coastline. no question the bay area has beautiful shores, as john ramos shows us they don't always get treated well. >> that is why we are out here today really try to bet this trash before it is out of our control. >> reporter: people showed up all over the bay area to help

out with coastal clean up day. >> we found one hair brush a chapstick. >> reporter: they didn't have any trouble finding what they were looking for. >> a planter, a pencil, and a dolls eyeball. >> reporter: thousands of people are out here to try and clean up the bay but the honest truth is that any garbage that reaches the bay, there is not much you can do about it, no practical way to clean it up. the trick is catch this trash before it gets into open water that is why volunteers focused on places like coleman creek in south san francisco the foilage acts like a natural filter, capturing trash as it flows from the city. >> there are areas that are kind ovine collected this is one of the places we go. -- kind of neglected. this is one of the places we go. >> reporter: organizers hopeful being green is about social change not a passing fad. >> people are starting to realize polluting creates an economic cost for them.

it is degrading our environment and that costs us money,. >> the fact that it is popular is really going to help out i hope it stays popular. >> reporter: clearly the education effort has a ways to go. the parent who launched this child child's letter to santa in a plastic bottle probably didn't mean any harm but. >> people shouldn't do this because it hurts the planet okay. this shouldn't be found in the water. >> reporter: the volunteers say they do feel they are making a difference but organizers stress this is just the beginning. >> this is a great start, people come out here and see how much trash is actually getting into the bay. where it effects fish and wildlife and then we need everybody to go home, and work on making sure cities stop this trash from getting into the bay. >> in south san francisco, john ray knows. cbs 5. >> octo mom is putting it all out there. bizarre items up for grabs in her front yard ,,

coastline a couple patches of fog sneak in there but that will clear out mostly sunny temperatures comfortable. numbers today, impressive. 97 degrees liver more. 99 santa rosa, 91 san raphael. 91 degrees san francisco. you get the idea hot day around the bay area. it continues this evening temperatures running in the 80s and 90s. slow to cool, offshore winds, over some of the mountain tops it will stay warm overnight tonight. if you plan on travelling around the states, 90s around the interior. monterey bay looking good headed in that direction. 75 degrees there. 92 degrees yosemite, 80 lake tahoe. high pressure in control it will stick around, right here, out ahead of it down below a couple patches of fog out toward the coastline for the most part, sunny and hot conditions, tomorrow offshore winds might continue they may break down toward the coastline. overnight, temperatures very balmy, 50s and 60s.

some mountain tops overnight lows may be only down 70s. by daytime temperatures running up the 80s and 90s inland, 70s back out toward the coastline east bay numbers running well into the 90s by the afternoon, 98 brent wood, pittsburgh, concord. north bay, hot side, 96 sonoma, 94 napa valley. looking out over the next couple day, slow to cool, it will heat up come monday but tuesday temperatures should cool off especially toward the coastline inside the bay everybody cools down as we head in toward the middle of next week temperatures coming down enjoy the heat while we have them. >> thanks. in case you were wondering actress lyndsey lohan is out of jail again. she is free on $300,000 bail after spending less than 24 hours behind bars for failing a drug test. the judge sent her to jail yesterday violating probation. lohan is required to wear an

ankle monitoring bracelet and stay away from clubs and bars and she will be back in court next month. hard times for the octo mom nadia suleman held a yard sale hoping to raise enough money to save her home from foreclosure among items up for sale the sofa she was sitting on when she found out she was pregnant with octuplets, a con gram and signed bikinis. at one point she had a reality tv deal but that appears fizzled. >> because i have been reluctant to do anything in regard to anything so i have been trying to work on writing on my own a book. i am working really really hard to make a living for my kids without exploiting them. >> the goal to raise $10,000 which she says will be enough to keep the bank at bay. two top ten teams go down, was one of them top ranked bama. stanford looks to end its drought next in sports ,,,,,,,,,,,,
